Today, Justin and I were talking about how Steven Stills is an awesome guy, with his panicked suave manner and awesome dress shirts and facial hair, and the fact that he’s “The Talent”. I also said that I loved Young Neil, because he’s just there and yet he still adds to it all. And, of course, Wallace is the talk of the town. Yet, no one necessarily talks about Scott (yet that’s a bad example because Scott is still very likable and interesting, anway).
Playing Red Dead Justin and I talked about the Revolver Characters. Because Justin doesn’t know much of the Revolver story, I would tell him how badass Shadow Wolf, Buffalo Soldier, and Jack Swift are, but never Red Harlow, the main character, due to how “Man with no Name” he is. The only praise I gave him was for being that archetype and seeing him do “western hero” things. In fact, we would even talk down for seeing so many Red Harlows, assuming that they were all trying to be badasses (we soon found out this was Achievement related).
Then it hit me, there is a love for the Supporting Character, even over the main character. How could we not love them. They are free from the bounds of being the hero, but they on his side and do badass things. But yet, that wasn’t as solid of a reason for me to like them. One of the greatest things is that a supporting character has a lack of the “Hero Shield” and the lesser known “Badass Generator”, making the character not die and makes him do awesome things, respectively. The fact that they achieve awesome status without these story-bounded ideas makes them great. In fact, their “support character personalities” work against this and still they stand tall. These personality defects would be viewed on a hero as a problem that he/she needed to get by, but on a support character, it’s considered a trait. We can see it gracefully and humorously applied to a support character but never to a main character as our expectations have the main character to solve their problems or take the straight mans approach (having none or minor ones) and, instead, solve larger than life problems. We can also identify more with these characters; no one is perfect, everyone is humorous and likes to see good prevail Simply put, they’re more unpredictable than an original, well rounded main character, and they act as comic reliefs.
Probably my favorite series filled with supporting characters is Gears of War; with Marcus and Dom included as supporting characters, as Epic can’t even decide whose story it is. Every archetype is explored here. The Redshirted Carmine brothers, the overly excited Cole Train, the Pessimistic Sarcastic Baird, the modern cowboy “bright side-of-life” Dizzy, the Gruff Military Man Hoffman, The By-The-Book Kim, the witty caring Dom, and the Slightly pissed leader, Marcus. This game uses the supporting character variety to say something about Humanity, which is grave danger. Though you expect Marcus to push through to the final punch, you value every character the same and know it can’t be won alone. For being a muscle man festival, it’s a quite fantastic “fighting extinction” story.
PS: There will be no mention of the entirely lacking any depth Spiritual Soldier, Tai, who’s mannerism barely shine or add any value
I watched it 2 times and it’s awesome. It’s a calling to me and my generation and culture, though I already knew that 2 years ago when some people pointed out that he was wearing a Mother 2 shirt when I was going through my Earthbound phase.
Anyway here’s some stuff I noticed and pointed out. Potential spoilers
The picture that Scott drew and shown Cosmo was drawn by Brian Lee O’Malley. It was originally to be Ramona’s head from the comic but Brain had the idea that it should be even stupider than that and be like a 5 year old drawing.
In the first meet awkward meet up with Scott and Ramona, there is a high-up light switch in the left corner. No one knows what it does.
Crash and the Boys get killed in the fight with Matt Patel, letting Sex Bob-ombs win the Battle.
On the bus ride home from battle of the bands, when Ramona is mentioning her Exs, “X”s glare on the window close to her. Scott has hearts on his side.
Ramona’s number is 212-664-7665. This was used in another Universal movie. It rings forever.
All the band are named after games or reference games. Sex Bob-omb is obvious. Clash of the Demonhead is Brian’s first video game. Crash and the Boys is an “extreme street olympics”. Also featured in books and other media (not the film) are Sonic and Knuckles (obvious), Kid Chameleon (Genesis sidescroller), and Shatterband (Shatterhand, which was totally localized and based on some Japanese thing)
There are tons of Smashing Pumpkin’s references. Scott wears his iconic “SP” shirt (double meaning). He also wears a “Zero” shirt during the Clash of the Demonhead concert (also a double meaning as Edgar thought of Scott as Boyfriend 0). During a discussion about Ramona’s past, the subtitle was called “The Infinite Sadness” named after “Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”, also the name of one of the volumes. (This is quite awesome)
I JUST REALIZED THAT THE CHAOS THEATER IS NAMED AFTER A LOCATION IN EARTHBOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEED MORE EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!! (at one point, Scott wore a Mother 2 shirt)
First time Scott enters the Chaos Theater, Cosmo is talking about how the first album was better than their “first album”, being the know-it-all. Second time, Cosmo is talking about how the comic was better than the movie.
So I heard you don’t like it when my Tumblr feed gets posted on my wall. Well, first off, a lot of people don’t have a Tumblr and I’m quite often very proud of my work. Don’t give me any of that “Selective Appreciative Audience” crap because people have a choice of being interested in my work and they also have a choice to invest their time in a tumblr or not. Second off, the fact that facebook gives everything a comment and like box gives the ability for non-facebookers to comment. I don’t think that’s against the gist of Tumblr where comments and be saved forever or you aren’t supposed to get any replies unless you invest in the post by reblogging. Besides, the poster knows already the slight disadvantages of posting on Facebook (recognition remains on Facebook alone and formatting issues). Third, flooding is always an issue on Facebook. I don’t think anyone should be scolded for taking up room on the Live Feed. Fourth, back to flooding, post aren’t forced to you like if you were following them on tumblr and viewing it in your dashboard. It’s a small sample and you have the choice of investing your attention. Everyone should have the chance to say to their friends, “Hey check this shit out”, but not to shove it in your face like the dashboard does. But if you have a friend on facebook that has a tumblr and made it a point not to follow that person, you’re probably a dick.
