I just watched my bonus disk for Mass Effect 2 on the making of the game. I consider myself a sucker Special Editions but its really my game designer mindset that likes to see how things are fine tuned.
However, this, along with Fallout 3’s commentary, is telling me what I already know. It’s almost trying to sell the game to me, and yet why should it? I bought the most expensive version of the game. I’m quite disappointed hearing that this game looks great by 5 different developers. Probably the most interesting is hearing the voice actors talk about how they see their characters and people vary on their opinion of Subject Zero and artistic and audio design (Surprisingly, Bioware did a lot of work on lighting to make the game moody when appropriate).
Journalism and analytical media should tell you things you don’t know and use things that you do know to explain something you don’t (emphasis on something established is considered something you don’t know). It can be smart to refresh our memories on information but that should never be the meat.
Anyway, on the topic of Gaming Commentary and “The Making of”, I would like to say Bungie does a great job at this and I recommend the Special Edition of Halo Reach (Not the one with the figurine).
